A hand-painted 55-metre-long mural has been unveiled as the first step in a Skyfields led public art trail on the Airport Estate, injecting a fresh pop of vibrancy to the town centre around Dunreath Village and DFO.

Created by renowned Perth based artist Cale Hummerston, the mural spans 55 metres in length and seven metres in height and took nine days to complete by hand.

Stretching along the full exterior wall of Dunreath Village – a neighbourhood shopping centre that's home to Woolworths, Dan Murphy's, Priceline and cafés – the mural depicts a 1956 Lincoln with an airline pilot in the driver's seat.

This nostalgic connection to the area's aviation heritage serves as a visual time capsule as Skyfields embarks on one of Australia's largest urban redevelopment projects. "This is the first of hopefully many artworks to pop-up in our town centre over the coming years as we create dynamic destinations and new amenities for the local community," said Dan Sweet, Chief Property Officer of Perth Airport.

"It's been phenomenal to work with Cale on this inaugural commission – the brief to him was simply to create something amazing as a visual gift for all the people who shop, work and pass through this area, and he has done a brilliant job entirely freeform using a paintbrush."

The striking mural is best viewed from the recreation area and picnic tables between Woolworths and DFO on High Street, just off Dunreath Drive.

Cale Hummerston from Hums Sign Art is known for his bold, hand painted works that reimagine past eras through a contemporary lens. Drawing on mid 20th Century visual styles, his work blends nostalgia with popular culture.

"It's certainly the largest mural I've ever created, there were a lot of smiles and chatter from people passing by as I worked on it each day with a paintbrush," said Cale. "The image and colours needed to be bold and visible from a distance, yet with clean lines that are easy to see close-up as well."
